CJ Buckley Regatta 2019
The 17th Annual CJ Buckley Regatta will be held at Goddard State Park on July 29 and 30, 2019.
This event , which is hosted by the Greenwich Bay Sailing Association (GBSA) and the East Greenwich Yacht Club (EGYC), was started in 2003 to honor the memory of CJ, a passionate sailor who died at age 17 after a courageous battle against brain cancer.
The regatta has grown to become one of the largest and most popular youth team race competitions in the country and has served as the Club 420 Association’s National Jr. Team Race Championship since 2009. The focus has never been just on winning but, rather, on providing a memorable learning experience emphasizing commitment, sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie.
The regatta is about giving back. It is run entirely by dedicated volunteers – over 75 strong on land and on the water – directed by Justin and Kyle Assad who have led the effort from the onset . It is made possible by generous gifts and donations from multiple sponsors. Proceeds from the event are placed in the CJ Buckley Sailing Foundation at GBSA and are used to provide assistance to talented young sailors based on merit and financial need.
This year we again plan to register a full complement of 24 teams, 72 boats, and over 150 junior sailors and alternates from across the US. We expect that upwards of 125 races will be completed each day before the Gold Fleet finals on day two. The energy and excitement of the participants give true meaning to CJ’s motto: “Sailing is life. The rest is just details”.
